Deschamps came in with two cows; a few are seen about Fish Lake, but they are the wood buffalo, more shy and wild than those on the plains.

Not quite as serious, but certainly a factor in economics, was the fact that the new buffalo which emerged was larger than the plains buffalo but smaller than the true wood buffalo.

These northern buffalo were known as the Wood Buffalo. Some biologists classify them as a separate species because of their somewhat larger size and darker colour.
